The Designer wanted to show a dream-like relationship between animals and herself. As the print series progresses there is a deterioration of image end eventually the viewer arrives at a vandalised, obscured final print. The series maps the progression between a good dream and a nightmare.

Printing Process

Because of my extension i was working within a timeframe in which i had no facilites to create or cut my prints/plates. Eventually i was able to find a studio with a press and i spent a full day working and printing there.

As i had little time i decided i would create the look i was going for - but with only one print (two plates - lino/drypoint). I chose to use the first concept i did as it establishes my pets in a guardian type of role as well as establishing a dream - showing two different types of maps. a relationship map and a emotional one.

while i was printing i came across a couple of complications - the first being that i couldn’t get my lino to register properly over my drypoint - it definitely could have been achieved, however as i had limited recourses i had to be content with what i had. However i became very pleased with the rawness and roughness of the final product - even when i had overprinted a couple of times.

I had a bit of fun using different paper types - for tests i used a thinner type slightly-corrugated paper and a thicker cartridge paper, although overall i was more interested in exploring the outputs of the prints and how i could adjust it afterwards (i.e. using watercolour / markers)

At this point i realised i would beale to meet the criteria of making a set - I decided i would be-able to make a dream set with this print: the first representes a good dream and then it gradually deteriorates into a bad dream. for the last print i was thinking i would vandalise the last print with a marker to enforce this.

Developing an Idea

When i started to develop my idea, as stated in the Proposal i knew i wanted do do an emotional type map so i started thinking about how i was going to achieve that.

The sketch at the bottom was something i drew in relation to the Art Nouveau style that i was interested in - while still sticking to the celtic style that i had initially started off with.

I decided i wanted to do a dream like storyboard with a parallel idea to that of Alice in Wonderland. To achieve this i decided to look up what each of my pets symbolise in celtic mythology and i would display them in my prints in a personified manner - almost in a Guardian type of a role.

According to this website, (along with others i had previously looked at and referred to previously in my journal) these are the basic symbolisms for a Cat, Dog and Rat:

Rat: Cunning, Sneaky, Sly

Cat: Sharp minded, Clever

Dog: Loyal, Courageous

I then decided to personify them according to this. But how to show this?

I started to think about other connotations associated with Alice in wonderland - that being Cards (i.e. A deck of cards - ace of spades etc) I took some reference pictures of some Tarot cards my friend owns which i find quite attractive and close in the art style im trying to achieve.

I decided to draw my personified guardians in card format - and then labelling them as profiles that would match their attitudes/personalities (i.e. Queen/King/Joker/Ace)

I then decided that to have the story translate better i should create a setting with all the “characters” interacting with my personified self (i decided to depict myself always with closed eyes so as to translate the fact that while it is an emotional map - it is one of a dream-scape)

I decided to scan in all my images and refine them on Illustrator as i would be creating a Lino plate and a drypoint plate for both images and i needed something to work with that was more prominent than scribbles.

I decided i would create the look i was after using a combination of drypoint (for detail) and lino (for bold line).
